Free Labor Day Printables, Watching The Tropics

Here is a web page with tons of Labor Day free printables. I will be choosing 3 of these to add to my Tuesday Sept 2nd lesson plan. Feel free to visit the site, and print any you may like http://homeschooling.about.com/od/holidays/ss/labordayprint.htm?nl=1

Once again I have my eyes glued on the Tropics. Gustav is strengthening, and making a beeline for the Gulf of Mexico. While we are not in the cone of danger, you never can be certain with the track of the storms. It can turn at anytime and head in a different direction. Plus there is always the threat of tornadoes, that spin off the storm. So tomorrow, once again, I will be in Hurricane preparedness mode. There is also TS Hanna, that looks like it is going to go through the Florida straits and emerge in the Gulf of Mexico, where it too can gain strength. So my focus is definately on the weather.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy Labor Day. If you are in the cone of Gustav, you may be evacuating or hunkering down. Please stay safe, and keep your eyes to the skys.

How Much Time Do You Spend Homeschooling?

Dont forget to take my poll, on the side bar. Just a quick contest update for my other blog. If you havent read the contest, you could win a ss blue topaz ring. Just give me a good dog cake recipe. Go to http://www.melissasjewelryandgemstoneblog.blogspot.com for all the details. I have 4 entries so far.

How long is your homeschooling day? What time do you start? What time do you end? For us we start at 8:30 AM, and stop at 2:00 PM. The one thing I like about homeschooling, is that can be flexible. If you work during the day, you can homeschool in the evening. You can even homeschool, just on weekends, as long as you cover your material. We do PE twice a week, for 30 min each, and of course recess every day for 30 min. Dont forget lunch, that is 30 min. These are things that can take away from book time, but are necessary for your children.

Of course that does not end a homeschooling moms schedule. For me I grade the work, make the log, make the curriculum, and do all the research. So I spend a great deal of time working on homeschooling. I do most of it over the summer, so that by the start of school, I just have to do lesson planning each week.

So how about you, and your homeschool day?

Are You Frugal Or Just Cheap Like Me?

Debt consolidation

I am a stay at home mom, who works part time as a Nurse, on the weekends. I homeschool, my children, and any of you that do that, you know it can be expensive. So on a very tight budget, how do you save money? Do you have creative ways, to cut your expenses, and save a little money? I do, and we are going to discuss them. Debt relief

For_opportunities

Debt help Ok, so how do we save money? It is not easy, I can tell you that. We came into our marriage, both lacking in the credit area, if you know what I mean. We both, spent our twenties, having a good time, and not being one bit frugal, or even worrying about saving money. Not a good choice, that is for sure. We have spent many years bringing down, our debt, and we did purchase our first home last year. Something I never thought would happen. At http://www.bills.com you can see what your bills IQ is, and learn ways to higher your credit score. I wish this was available, when we were racking our brains, to figure out where we could save a few bucks.

Consolidate debt In the dictionary, next to the word cheap, is probably a picture of me. Oh I love nice things, as much as anyone else, but I dont like to spend a fortune to have it, or work tons of hours either. So here is my list of ways to save money.

1- Take a shower every other day, rather than every day, unless you have a real sweaty stinky job or something.
2- Wash your laundry in cold water, not hot water. If you can stand doing your dishes that way too, that would be great.
3- Re use ziploc bags, that arent really dirty.
4- I learned to make my own gemstone jewelry. This was not really that difficult, and it saves a ton of money. I even made my own wedding set.
5- For homeschooling, I get as much off the internet for free, that I can. This takes a little time and effort, but saves a ton of money.
6- Set aside, 20 dollars, every single paycheck. Mark it as savings, and stick it in your undie draw if you have to. Be sure to not spend it, it adds up quickly, and soon you will have a little bit of savings to invest, or pay off a bill.
7- I shop all year for xmas. I pretty much know what my kids will want. Every time I go shopping, I buy something, then stick it in the closet. Then come xmas I dont have to put money on credit cards.
8- Buy gift cards, for 10 dollars, or more if you can, stick them away and then at xmas you have a whole bunch of cards to give as gifts. Be sure to check with the store how long from time of purchase to expiration date. It may say on the card.
9- Car pool with co workers, to save gas, and keep your tire pressure at the correct level. Some people laugh at that, but it is true, it will get you better gas mileage, and save on your gas bill. I car pool, with two of my co workers. They live right on the same route I follow. It saves a lot of money in gas.
10- Buy food in bulk, if you can store it. Meat is expensive, so substitute with beans one or two nights a week. Buy the larger packages of meat, then separate them into serving sizes, before freezing them.
11- Dont eat out. That is a hard one for us. We enjoy eating out, and honestly used to eat out three times a week. Now once a week, at the very most.
12- These are more drastic, but I have done them to cut expenses, when money was extremely tight- cut cable out or decrease to basic, cut high speed internet and go with dial up, cut out the cell phone and use a tracphone, cut out long distance and use calling cards, instant messaging, or email. Keep the air conditioner, set on 82. Turn off lights, when not being used. I used to go as far as unplugging everything, at night, that was not on. My husband couldnt handle that though, and I had to abandon it.

These are all ways, we have saved money, and most of them we still currently use. So how do you live more frugally, and save a few cents?

Dont forget to visit http://www.bills.com and take the bills IQ test. You can learn ways to help increase your credit score, and save a few bucks too.

Ok I am ready for Hurricane season to be over already. Fay, which is still a tropical low, has now moved back to the east, and the severe weather is once again heading our way, ugh. Deep Discounts Through Group Purchasing Power

DVD's are not cheap, but by purchasing as a group, we will all save at least 15% and as much as 40% depending on how many DVDs we purchase. Buy as few or as many titles as you want -- but it's the TOTAL number of titles we buy AS A GROUP that determines everyone's final price -- so help us spread the word and thereby save yourself and everybody else some money!

We will keep this Group Buy open for a full month in order to increase our changes of hitting the maximum discount.

CONDITIONAL ORDERS: We realize that these DVDs are not cheap, even with the discounts. BUT, if you can't afford the current group price, you can always place a CONDITIONAL order. For example, suppose you want to buy, but ONLY if we get the 40% discount. Well, when you place your order, you can select 40% from the Group Savings pop-up menu associated with the title(s) you want to buy. If we DO get to the maximum discount level, your order goes through automatically. If we do NOT get to the maximum discount level, your order will NOT go through. However, consider carefully! Suppose we get to 35% off and you were holding out for 40%. You'll miss out! There is currently no way for you to change your order after it is placed.

SUPER SAVER TIP: We have been advised by some members that Bill Nye DVDs are available through their public libraries. Disney Education has advised us that this tends to be more true of the large public libraries. Regardless, we wanted you to know this so that you can make the right decision for your family.

MINIMUM ORDER QUANTITY: We must order at least 20 DVDs as a group in order to go forward with this Group Buy.

The bigger our order, the more we all save, so tell your friends and homeschool groups!

To take advantage of this special offer, you must place your order no later than 09-19-2008 at 11:59 PM Eastern.

Regards,
Homeschool Buyers Co-op

Who Doesn't Love Bingo?

Disney Bingo

When I was a young girl, I used to go to Bingo, with my grandmother, and her friend Effie. We lived in upstate NY, and my grandmother loved Bingo. Whenever I would spend the night at her house, she would take me to play Bingo. Effie was a gruff, grumpy old lady, and I took great pride in irritating her. She was easy to irritate. Very often though, that would lead to me not paying attention to my Bingo cards. I actually won, once, and Effie caught it and screamed Bingo!! for me, at the top of her lungs. I really thought I had a heart attack. I was so excited. I won 25 dollars, that was a lot of money to me back then, and I could not wait to spend it. I tried not to harrass Effie, too much after that. I guess she wasn't as grumpy as I thought lol. Those memories, are special to me, since Effie, and my Grandma are no longer with us. My sister loved it so much, she still goes to Bingo, when she gets the chance. Now there is Disney Bingo. Who doesn't have a favorite Disney character, mine is Pooh. Now you can purchase a Disney Bingo DVD, and play it right from the comfort of your home, with your kids. View the short video below to learn about the new Disney Bingo DVD.

I think this would make a great gift, for any young child. If you are looking for a wholesome, family oriented game, this would fit that description. They can learn letters, numbers, match them up, and you can even get little prizes for them to win. The Disney Bingo dvd can be purchased at www.drugstore.com or www.amazon.com This wonderful, kids game, is brought to you by Screenlife Games.

Since my children, are young, and my mom does live here in Florida, we could buy this game and make some Bingo memories of our own. You could make Bingo memories, with your children too.

We Did Excellent On Our Homeschool Evaluation

Yeah, I am glad it is finally over. I was so nervous. Being my first year of homeschooling, and I made the curriculum myself, I was a bit nervous. We did excellent, and DJ is above average in his reading. Matter of fact the only thing she didnt care for, was the way he held his pencil, and needs to work on handwriting neatness. Well I am glad it is over, and we can move onto third grade.

TS Fay, is still dumping rain on us, and wind gusts, nothing severe however, and no flooding here.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Terrific Thursdays, My Favorite Blogs

Starting today, and every Thursday, I will be posting about one of my favorite blogs. Everyday I visit blogs, and some of them are great. These sites may, or may not be related to homeschooling, but several different topics. Today I am going to start with work at home mom revolution. I love this blog, because as a stay at home mom, I am always looking for work from home opps. She has tons of work at home opps, alot are freelancing or writing jobs. These are great for anyone who wants to make a little extra money, while staying home with your kids. I have not found any that, I am completely qualified for, but she is always adding new jobs, and tons and tons of info. If you have not checked out her blog yet go to http://workathomemomrevolution.blogspot.com/ and see if there is a job available for you. This is one of my favorite blogs, and I check it often, even if I forget to drop my card, sorry.

Tomorrow is my sons Homeschool Evaluation, our first, and I have no idea how long it takes. Then my husband has an online webinar, for his work at home job. Yes even my husband, has a work at home job, along with his full time job. It allows us to cover some of the expense of our health insurance, since they have cut his overtime. Anyway, I may not be able to drops, comments, or new posts til late Fri, or not even until Sat or Sun, depending on TS Fay, and my weekend job.

Please check out my contest at my other blog, http://www.melissasjewelryandgemstoneblog.blogspot.com You can win a SS blue topaz ring, details can be found in the archives. All you have to do is give me a recipe for a cake that a dog will love.

If The Earth Was Destroyed, You Have To Leave, What Would You Take?

Social-spark-315x235

The earth is being destroyed, you have to leave to another planet. What one thing would you have to take with you? Now the obvious thought would of course be my children, husband and dog. But those are obvious, and you need to pick something you just couldnt live without. What would it be?

Yep as you can see, that is a roll of toilet paper. That would be the one thing I could not live without. You know, you will have to go no matter what. Your body will still produce waste products, and the thought of being unclean in the southern area of my body, is really unbearable. Matter of fact, it could border on torture.

Operation Immortality: Leave your mark. Save Humanity.

So why am I talking about toilet paper, and the earth being destroyed, anyway. Because there is a cool free game, available to play for all you sci fi, army types, who want to save the world. http://www.operationimmortality.com/ is where you can find this cool game. It is called Tabula Rasa, and there are only 11 days left to play this very cool game. You get to choose which human achievements you think are the best, choose why you think your DNA should be preserved for the next generation of humans, and leave a message for all the earthlings you wish to save.

I looked at this game, it is pretty cool. You need to have Adobe Flash Player, to open and play it. Once you have that, you are all set. I might even give it a try myself, after I think of some pretty creative answers to enter. If you love sci fi, army type games, then you should go to http://www.operationimmortality.com/ and enter the game for yourself. Spread the word, and have your friends enter, see who has the better answers. So what one thing could you not live without?

Annual Homeschool Evaluation Form

Here in Florida, you must submit a yearly evaluation form, to the public school in your county. The evaluation must be performed by a certified teacher, take the FCAT given by a certified teacher, or have evaluation done by a Psychologist. Our evaluation, is Friday. I am a little nervous, and it was not an easy job finding someone able to do the evaluation. This is a copy of the form, that needs to be filled out and submitted to the school. Keep a copy for yourself, just in case the school loses it. If you take the standardized exam, instead, the wording can be changed a little to reflect that. Please feel free to copy and use this as you need it.

Waiting for Fay Plus Math Teaching Ideas

Well we are still waiting for Fay, and it is starting to get nerve racking. It appears we will miss a direct hit, and it never got stronger than a Tropical Storm. It is maintaining its 60 mile an hr winds, however, despite being over land. We will most likely get heavy rain, and need to watch for tornadoes. We are currently under flood watches, but no tornado watches yet. South Florida, is just getting hammered by this storm, and I wish them all the best. I hope they are all safe, and heading the watches and warnings.

Now on to some Homeschool information. DJ will be learning Division this year, and I am just a little nervous about it. I am very good at math, but teaching it is a bit different. I found this great site, that has great ideas for teaching math. Multiplication, and Division are the main topics with teaching tips. It has games, tips, information, free worksheets to print, and teaching ideas. Go to http://www.teachingideas.co.uk/maths/contents07multiplicationdivision.htm to check it out. I will be using some of their teaching ideas, for sure.

Watching TS Fay, Free Transportation Unit, Homeschool Freebie of The Day

Todays post, is chock full of stuff. First we are continuing to track TS Fay. It has grown to 60 miles and hour winds, and is just entering warm waters off of Cuba. They Keys are being evacuated, and the track has once again shifted just a hair to the East. Yesterday, they said south Florida, would most likely avoid a direct hit, now that has changed yet again. Watches are all the way up to Tampa, and it is predicted to become at least a category 1 hurricane, which is a minimal hurricane. Tornadoes would be the biggest threat for us, if it makes landfall south of Tampa.

This weeks School Express newsletter contains a free themed unit on Transportation. Since the history of transportation, is a part of our third grade curriculum, this is one I was glad to see. If you would like to receive the school express free newsletter, go to http://www.schoolexpress.com and sign up. It is completely free, and every Sunday, they will send a new themed unit.

This week at homeschool freebie of the day, the following free subjects will be available.
Monday- If I could do it again, this is a free advice article from people who have homeschooled for many years.

Tuesday- Childhood Stories of George Washington &
Abraham Lincoln", great read-alouds by Anne Tatum

Wednesday- Bible Scavenger Hunt"
Challenge your kids in this Bible-based scavenger hunt
and exploration from Values-Driven Family

Thursday- Quilted Hearts Doll Quilt Project"
A wonderful learning project for young hands eager to learn
to sew and quilt, from Seasons at Home magazine

Friday- Fun Audio Adventures Sampler

To take advantage of these great freebies, go to www.homeschoolfreebieOfTheDay.com
and sign up for their free newsletter. Every Monday, you will get new freebies, for every day of the week.

Hurricane Preparedness: A Lesson We Always Have To Know

Here in Florida, we are watching Tropical Storm Fay. Why it is still unorganized, it has not weakened, and has its eyes set on Florida. This is a good time to get out Hurricane ready kit, up to snuff and ready to go, should we need it. Public School does Fire Safety, we do that too, but we also do Hurrican readiness. Usually the first few weeks of school, we concentrate on what we would do in a hurricane. This year it is early, because we are on the watch. I make sure we have an emergency bag packed, should we have to evacuate. It would include, but not limited to,first aide kit, bottled water, non parishable food, at least one set of dry clothes for each person, extra cash, credit cards though they may not work if power goes out cash is better, any medication you or your family may need, charged cell phone, we also have walkie talkies that we keep charged, battery operated weather radio ours is also wind up should the batteries die, flashlights with fresh batteries, any important documents in a sealed bag to prevent from getting wet. A portable DVD player, with charger, and some videos, favorite toys. Toys are not a priority, but if you already have them packed, then at least the kids will be occupied should they have to evacuate to another area. A full tank of gas, should you have to go inland. If you have a generator, make sure it is in good working order, if you dont consider getting one. Outside be sure to tie down anything that can blow around, and cause damage. Bring in lawn furniture, and kids toys. Know which way you will go, should you have to leave. We are about an hour, from the coastline, so the biggest threat to us, in a hurricane, is gusty winds, very heavy rain, and the tornadoes that spin off the hurricane. Have a safe place in your home, should a tornadoe strike. An interior hallway, that has no outside walls, or closet, that is not on an outside wall. Make sure everyone knows where they are to go, and to get there when they are told to, without asking questions. Dont forget about your pets. Be sure to take food, and whatever else they may need. Shelters will not let you bring pets, so plan ahead what you will do. This will be our task, the next 24-48 hrs, watching and preparing for Tropical Storm/Hurricane Fay. This is never a fun task, and can be very scary, but being prepared takes off some of the stress.

Would You Ever Moon Someone?

I just had to make a post about this. I would assume, a Professor at a College, would be mature, well rounded, and able to communicate in an effective manner, especially since he was the Leader of the debate team. So what would his purpose be to moon a full room of people out of anger, during a meeting? Not only do I find this to be absolutely hysterical, but completely ludicrous. The better part of the story, is that he has not yet been punished by the college. Is this man, who obviously has problems with anger management, someone you would want teaching your child? I dont understand, what is the point of mooning someone. What does that even mean? Would you be offended by this, or would you just laugh, and tell this man how absolutely stupid and childish he is. The absurdity of the week, is the College Professor that mooned a room full of people, during an angry debate.

The History Of Communication

One of the things my son will be learning, in 3rd grade, is the history of communication. I spent countless hours, trying to find material for a 3rd grader, to cover this topic. It was not included in the 3rd grade history book I purchased. Anyway after spending alot of time searching, I was finally able to find several options. If this is part of your curriculum this year, check them out, and use them at your will. They are all free.

http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/bl_history_of_communication.htm this is a timeline graph from the beginning to modern day communication.

http://www.biography.com/search/article.do?id=192831 From Biography.com a biography on Alexander Graham Bell, that is geared towards young learners. You can print the article, and make questions, for your homeschooler to take.

Please feel free to use any of these free options, for your history of communication topic. If you have any you would like to share, please feel free to do so.

What Would Be The Worst Thing You Could Find On Your Porch?

Being that we live in a tropical environment, I would say a gator. But since gators are not abundant where we are, snakes would be it. So what do you think was on my front porch last night, around 9 pm? A big snake, and I mean big. The dog was in the window, barking, but it was a different kind of bark. I thought the neighbors cat was up there again. When I looked I saw this large long black thing. At first it looked just like the dogs leash, and I thought what on earth is that doing there. Then I realized it was a snake, and it wasnt moving very fast. Now this really creeped me out, because our porch has a roof, so it climbed the stairs? Uh no way. So I yelled to my husband to please come get this thing off my porch before I have a stroke. The dog was going crazy. Now for the record, yes I am petrified of snakes, especially big ones. I dont have any idea why it would climb my porch, nor do I know why it would even be in my yard. We live in town, though it is rural, but still in town. About a month ago, I had seen one in the back yard, by the pool, but it was small. So it either grew, or I got more than one, ugh. So my husband chased it away, but I was not comforted.

So how do I get a snake to leave my yard? I have no idea. I searched the net last night and it appears to be a Eastern Indigo Snake. I wish I had snapped a picture of it. They are harmless, and they say helpful. They can get very large, and yes they do climb, and very often live in the trees, I told my husband I didnt like that tree. They are actually endangered, and on the protected list in Florida. Glad I didnt kill it, though if it fell on me I couldnt make any promises. I hope it doesnt live in my yard, and was just passing through. We have all kinds of critters, that it could make a meal of, so I dont think that is going to happen anytime soon.

So what would be the worst thing you could find on your front porch?

The End Of Summer Nears

The days are getting shorter. The evenings just a little bit cooler. The end of summer is near. We dont officially start back homeschooling, until the day after Labor Day. We go a few weeks later, than our public schools do. I am actually looking forward, to getting back into a school routine. My kids are already sleeping later, in anticipation of getting up at a set time. We have already planned one field trip, to the Ocean. We will be going the same week, that we do the Ocean Life theme for science. I found a ton of Virtual Tours, and they are great for homeschool field trips. I will be sharing them here, on this blog, so keep watch. 3rd grade, is really just a repeat of 2nd grade, with some new material added in. Division, will be the biggest addition this year, to our curriculum. We touched on it, at the end of 2nd grade, but will dive right in for 3rd grade. This one has me a little nervous. I know how to do division, and math was one of my favorite subjects, but teaching it is completely different. We had a great summer. Swimming every day, trip to chuck e cheese, fireworks, birthdays, but now I am ready to get back to school. When do you start back to school?

The Sproutwells Are Coming To Your Neighborhood

Watch this short, cute video on the Sproutwells, and then we can chat about them.

So what did you think? They were kind of cute, and funny. Just a typical fruit, and vegetable family trying to make it in the human world sproutwells Cute concept, cute characters, kind of snotty kids which is typical for modern cartoon characters.

What vegetable, or fruit would you be? I said a tomato, and my 8 yr old laughed, and said that would suit you. I said why, and he said because they are always red, which means they are hot heads. Very funny I said. A tomato would suit me though. I am short, plump, and just a teensy weensy bit red, sometimes.

You will notice, in the clip, the neighbor who is obviously not used to having different people in her neighborhood, and the typical pre set notions that come with that. I will be interested to see, where the writers, go with the story line. It was a very short clip, with the neighbor, leaving obviously not liking her new neighbors. There is one other clip available, on youtube, just go to youtube, and type in Sproutwells, to view it, then share it with all your friends and family, and this clip too. Let them all pick what vegetable they would be, and why. It could be a fun game.

YOU Homeschool, Why?

You wouldnt believe how many people ask me that question. Some in a rude manner, it is like homeschooling is dirty, or in some way secretive. I did not choose to homeschool, to isolate my children, and make them into some kind of weirdos, a general misconception, I am finding. I chose to homeschool for several reasons. When I became a mother, at the ripe old age of 31, I decided I wanted to be a stay at home mom. The first 3 yrs of my sons life, that was not possible. Day care was an awful experience, in my opinion. Then when I became pregnant, with my second child, I told my husband, I want to work nights, and only 2 nights a week. We have been doing that ever since. While I am tired, and just a little grumpy the nights I have to work, it is wonderful to be able to stay home with my children. Then my son had to start kindergarten. We were in Florida then, and I was not very fond of the school system. Another misconception, is that people think we are snobs, and just think our kids are better than others, again not true. My problems with the school system, have more to do with me, than the actual system itself, though I dont think anyone who lives in Florida can deny that the school system is really not that good. We did the public school thing, right until the start of second grade. My son excelled, and there was no learning issues. However, when we bought the new home, and moved to another school district, a much better school I might add, we found out that there were only 3 bus stops in the whole town. That meant my son would get on the bus at 7 am, and not get home until 3:45 pm, then with the walk home, in thunder lightning, pouring rain etc, it would be 4 pm. I found this to be very unacceptable, and was quite frankly appalled. The school said, well you can always bring him and pick him up. Yes true, but with only one car, and my husband works 5 days a week, not a real good option either. I had always wanted to homeschool anyway. I have never been a fan of the public school system, not even when I was in it. So we took the plunge, and we are happy we did. There is always the issue of socialization, as I stated at the beginning, they will become isolated nerds or something. I personally do not believe peer relationships are nearly as important, as family is. My son keeps in touch, with two of his good friends from his old school. He made several new friends playing youth baseball, and interacts well with all children on any public outings we do. My 4 yr old, is the one I need to be more aggressive with. She really doesnt have any children her age to play with. There are no small children that live near us, but I did just find a local homeschool group, so I hope that will be beneficial. I can always send both of them, to a local daycare, three days a week for an hr or so, for socialization. I may choose that option, should the homeschool group not be feasible. So when people ask me YOU homeschool, why this long winded answer is what they get. If they are still listening when I am done, they will see that I love being with my children, teaching them, learning from them, and that it was the best choice for us.

Granola Banana Sticks, Snacks Your Kids Can Make

Part of our homeschooling activities, this year, will be learning simple cooking. Following recipes, and instructions, is a fundamental part of learning. Here is a simple, and healthy recipe your children can make.

1/4 cup peanut butter
2 tbsp plus 1 1/2 tsp honey
4 1/2 tsps brown sugar
2 tsp milk
3 medium firm bananas
6 popsicle sticks
2 crunchy oat and honey granola bars, crushed

In a small saucepan, combine the peanut butter, honey, brown sugar and milk. Cook until heated through, stirring occasionally.

Peel bananas and cut in half widthwise, insert a popsicle stick into one end of each banana half. Spoon peanute butter mixture over bananas to coat completely. Sprinkle with granola. Serve immediately or place on waxed paper lined baking sheet and freeze.

Obviously using the stove, for young cooks has to be used with discretion and monitoring. I think these would be great for snack day, for kids who go to public school, as well as homeschool groups. Enjoy

Making A Homeschool Yearbook

My son, DJ, who is 8, will be entering 3rd grade in September. This is our second year homeschooling, and he had a good idea. He is very much into drawing, and has just discovered photography. He had an idea, to take pictures, and drawings, save tehm for the whole year, and then make his own yearbook, of him and his sisters adventures. This should be interesting, and I personally cant wait to see the outcome of his hard work. We will start the project once school, has officially started.

Graduating Early For Homeschoolers: Good Idea Or Not?

This was a topic that was brought up, on one of my homeschool groups. It got me thinking, what will we do, when my children are old enough to consider it. Here in Floria, Homeschool children, dont have to earn a certain number of credits to graduate. Matter of fact, they dont regulated what you teach, or dont teach your children at all. You must show that your child, is showing progression, though. The question, posted was, if your child is say 15 or even 16, and has met the requirements for graduation, would you let them graduate, and move to college. I am not really sure how they came to the conclusion, that all high school requirements had been met, when there arent any for homeschooled children. At any rate, the basic question, of graduating early, would depend for me. I personally think 15 or 16, is way too young to go off to college, especially away from home or living on campus. If they wanted to take college level courses, at a Community College, and still be at home, that would be a good idea, and great option. If they wanted to work, and get experience in a certain field, before deciding what major to take in college, that would be another great option. Just graduating High School, though and moving off on their own, to a full time college life, would not work for me at age 15 or 16, matter of fact I am not so sure about 17. So what do you think about this subject? Would you let your 15 or 16 year old, go off to college, on their own. If yes, why? If no, why?
